Job Summary
The Chief Underwriter leads OneAmerica success in individual medical underwriting for AUL, State Life and medically underwritten policies for the Employee Benefits division. The Chief Underwriter is forward thinking, sets the strategic vision for individual underwriting for AUL and State Life products, and partners with senior leaders of Distribution, Marketing, Actuarial, IT, and ILFS Finance, Legal, Risk Management, Enterprise Operations and Claims to effectively facilitate and manage risk. The role includes providing active support for product development and distribution teams to provide competitive underwriting practices and innovative underwriting approaches to help grow OneAmerica businesses.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Set risk strategy and vision of short-term and long-term objectives in Underwriting
  • Establish ILFS risk assessment philosophy, approach and parameters, including applicant medical/personal/financial information required for underwriting
  • Maintains strong relationships with industry stakeholders, including reinsurers
  • Coordinate and build/foster strong field/producer relationships
  • Maintain active knowledge of competitors and market issues
  • Collaborate with field stakeholders with an “outside-in” customer experience perspective
  • Collaborate on risk management strategies with VP Pricing and Product
  • Contribute strategically as part of the ILFS (and Enterprise) leadership function
  • Provide EWA leadership: empowerment through forming and following OAWays, creating experiences that lead to the right beliefs, actions and results for the organization, and clarifying decision making authority

Job Requirements
Required Education and/or Certifications
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience with knowledge of UW
Recommended Education and/or Certifications
  • Recommended College Major: BS/BA Business, Management, Communications, Finance, Arts and Sciences, Risk Management
  • One or more of the following: FLMI, FALU, CLU, ChFC, CLTC
Required Work Experience
  • 15-20 years life and/or medical underwriting experience and direct company experience preferred
  • Underwriting Approval Authority: Life ≥$10,000,000; LTC $5,000,000
